Nithya Raman, the first democratic socialist on the Los Angeles city council, defeated incumbent Karen Bass to become mayor. Her victory marked a historic moment, as America’s two largest cities will now be led by democratic socialist mayors. The election also saw Los Angeles voters endorse several DSA‑LA‑backed candidates, including Marissa Roy for city attorney and Angela Gonzales‑Torres, who unseated incumbent Jimmy Gomez for a U.S. House seat. DSA‑LA reported that volunteers knocked on more than one hundred ten thousand doors during the campaign. The organization highlighted that the results reflected Angelenos’ desire for leaders independent of corporate interests, especially after the Palisades fire controversy.
