Southwest Airlines is reshaping its Rapid Rewards program, replacing the historic A‑List and A‑List Preferred tiers with silver, gold and platinum levels. The change, effective January first, aims to boost revenue and reward high‑spending travelers. Silver status will require thirty‑five thousand tier‑qualifying points or twenty‑five flights, while gold will need sixty‑five thousand points or fifty flights. Platinum, the new top tier, demands one‑hundred‑forty thousand points or one‑hundred flights, granting a one‑hundred‑twenty percent earnings bonus and unlimited companion passes. The overhaul also eliminates free checked bags and open seating, charging for options that rivals have long offered. Companion Pass holders can retain their passes, but from the 2027 earning year, benefits will be earned through points or flights. Southwest’s move signals a shift toward a more conventional airline loyalty model, aligning with industry peers and expanding international partnerships.
