The University of Maryland has suspended its club tennis team indefinitely after a racist graphic appeared in a tournament program distributed in College Park. The graphic, featuring a recognizable Ku Klux Klan symbol, was shared via email with other university clubs ahead of a weekend fall tournament. UMD’s Recreation and Wellness office learned of the incident and immediately halted the team’s participation, while the Office of Student Conduct and the university police department launched investigations. Howard University’s team, represented by captain Toni Rachal, demanded a formal apology and sensitivity training, and requested that tournament funds be donated to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The incident underscores the ongoing challenge of confronting hate symbols within collegiate athletics.
