Top trade envoys for China and the European Union concluded two days of intensive talks in Beijing aimed at easing escalating economic tensions and growing trade imbalances. China’s commerce ministry announced that both sides reached a preliminary understanding regarding hybrid vehicle trade and agreed to explore potential tariff reductions on select imported products. Follow-up discussions are scheduled via video conference in January followed by an in-person meeting in March. EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic emphasized the necessity for tangible outcomes to rebalance bilateral commerce, noting last year's massive trade surplus reaching 360 billion euros. Major friction points persist over European restrictions on advanced computer chipmaking machinery enacted under national security guidelines, as well as ongoing debates regarding protectionist measures. While an October deadline for significant rebalancing passed without a comprehensive breakthrough, both major global economies remain committed to ongoing diplomatic negotiations to prevent further escalation.
