Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous-driving unit, closed a $5 billion term loan on October 8, giving the company its first debt financing as it expands driverless ride-hailing in the United States and internationally. Waymo said PIMCO, Blackstone and Sixth Street participated as lead syndicated lenders, while Capital Group, Loomis Sayles and T. Rowe Price were significant lenders. Goldman Sachs served as sole lead bookrunner. The financing follows a $16 billion equity investment completed earlier this year that valued Waymo at $126 billion. Waymo said the debt will provide additional financial flexibility and accelerate expansion of its fully autonomous service. The company launched service in its 15th U.S. city in September and announced plans for Singapore, while preparing for a Tokyo commercial launch in 2027. Bloomberg reported before closing that the private loan had grown from more than $3 billion to $5 billion. The October 8 closing confirms the financing amount reported earlier.
