Canadian poet, essayist, and translator Anne Carson won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday for her bold and inventive works blending classical and modern traditions. The Swedish Academy announced the honor in Stockholm, recognizing Carson for creating new forms for contemporary literature through her playful dialogue with classical antiquity. Permanent secretary Ingrid Carlberg stated that the academy reached Carson while she was in Iceland listening to the wind, noting that she was deeply surprised by the award. Born in Toronto and aged 76, Carson is renowned for genre-defying works such as Autobiography of Red, classical translations, and multidisciplinary collaborations with artists including Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed. The prize carries a cash award and cements her legacy as a towering figure in modern letters.
