English golfer Marco Penge has returned to Madrid to defend his Spanish Open title following a breakthrough season that reshaped his career. Last year's playoff victory earned Penge his first career appearance at the Masters under new qualification criteria for national open winners. The milestone win capped a stellar stretch including victories at the Hainan Classic and Danish Golf Championship, propelling him to finish second behind Rory McIlroy in the Race to Dubai standings and securing dual membership on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour. Despite battling illness, injury, and a demanding personal transition involving his newborn son's four-week intensive care stay, Penge recorded four worldwide top-10 finishes. Entering this week's title defense in Madrid, Penge aims to regain momentum after tying for last among those making the cut at the Bank of Utah Championship last week.
