Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives whose political career was overshadowed by a federal conviction and sexual abuse disclosures, died over the weekend at age 84. The Kendall County Coroner’s Office in Illinois confirmed Monday that Hastert passed away from natural causes at his home. A former high school teacher and wrestling coach, Hastert represented Illinois in Congress from 1987 to 2007, serving as Speaker from 1999 to 2007. His institutional legacy unravelled years after leaving office when federal investigators discovered structured bank withdrawals totaling millions in hush money paid to conceal past abuse of teenage boys. While the statute of limitations prevented direct sexual assault charges, Hastert pleaded guilty in 2015 to federal banking violations. At his 2016 sentencing, a federal judge termed him a "serial child molester" and sentenced him to 15 months in prison.
