Tampa Bay Lightning captain Victor Hedman returned to NHL action on Thursday night against the New York Rangers after stepping away in March to address his mental health. The 35-year-old Swedish defenseman missed significant time during the 2025–26 season due to mental health leave and an elbow injury that required surgery, limiting him to just 33 games. Over the offseason, Hedman underwent a distinct physical transformation, dropping 18 pounds down to 228 pounds to increase his speed and agility on the ice while maintaining physical strength. Lightning head coach Jon Cooper noted Hedman's improved conditioning ahead of his 18th NHL season. Hedman expressed excitement and renewed energy for the upcoming campaign, viewing his prolonged absence and recovery as a long-term benefit. The return of the Norris Trophy-winning veteran reinforces Tampa Bay's defensive core and highlights a broader shift in professional sports regarding mental health awareness.
