Rivian Automotive is recalling 98,828 vehicles in the United States due to an obstruction issue affecting the rearview camera image, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The safety regulator announced the recall action, noting that the defect can potentially reduce the driver's visibility behind the vehicle when operating in reverse. According to NHTSA documentation, the rearview camera image may be blocked by a system notification when the vehicle is put into reverse, failing to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111. The compromised field of view increases the potential risk of a crash. The recall affects specific vehicle models and production years, including certain 2022 through 2027 R1S SUVs, 2022 through 2026 R1T pickup trucks, and 2027 R2 models. Owners of the affected vehicles are scheduled to receive formal recall notification letters starting November 9. To remedy the issue, Rivian has released an over-the-air software update to resolve the notification block on the rearview camera display free of charge.
