The European Central Bank launched a new service on Monday linking its payment system to blockchain-based financial markets, allowing banks and investors to settle transactions using central bank-backed euros. Known as Pontes, the platform initially operates between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. CET on business days, with early participants including Deutsche Bank, Santander, and Clearstream. The ECB stated that the technology aims to streamline asset lifecycles and increase transaction efficiency through automation. Additionally, the central bank announced plans to invest a portion of its own funds in highly rated, euro-denominated public debt issued on-chain. This initiative aligns with broader European efforts to modernize financial infrastructure and reduce reliance on private digital alternatives. Similar central bank projects are underway globally, including the Swiss National Bank's Project Helvetia and the Bank of England's Digital Securities Sandbox. The ECB continues development toward a retail digital euro targeted for a 2029 launch.
