Netflix will premiere a 10-episode sequel to A Different World on September 24, returning viewers to Hillman College with a new generation of students. The series centers on Deborah Wayne, daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her freshman year. Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy return, alongside other original cast members, while Debbie Allen returns as executive producer and director. Production used historically Black colleges and universities in Atlanta, including Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College and Morehouse College. The original sitcom, which ran from 1987 through 1993, became closely associated with HBCU representation and with viewers’ memories of college and career decisions. Actor Cornell Young IV told The Associated Press that filming at HBCUs made him reconsider his college choices. Whether the sequel changes educational aspirations like its predecessor remains unproven before release. Netflix is positioning the series as a continuation rather than a reboot.
