A federal judge has signaled an inclination to reject a key component of a proposed four-hundred-million-dollar settlement between the United States Justice Department and video-sharing application TikTok. U.S. District Judge George H. Wu in Los Angeles stated he is tentatively unwilling to vacate a 2019 Federal Trade Commission consent decree originally imposed on TikTok predecessor Musical.ly. Under the agreement struck in August, TikTok agreed to pay three hundred million dollars immediately, with an additional one hundred million dollars contingent upon the termination of the 2019 decree. Judge Wu noted that the record fails to demonstrate that ending the oversight is a durable remedy suitably tailored to recent corporate changes. The original lawsuit, filed in 2024, alleged that TikTok and parent company ByteDance violated children's online privacy laws by collecting data from users under thirteen without parental consent. A hearing has been scheduled for Monday to review the government's request further.
