Climate change likely contributed to a catastrophic glacier and rock wall collapse on Nepal's Langtang Lirung mountain in late August, according to the World Weather Attribution group. The disaster triggered massive flooding that killed approximately 1,400 people and left thousands missing across parts of Nepal and Tibet. Researchers reported that August temperatures in the Himalayan region were roughly 5 degrees Celsius higher than normal, with 1.5 degrees directly linked to human-induced global warming. Rapidly rising temperatures accelerated glacier thinning and caused deep permafrost thawing, while unusually high snowfall last year produced excessive meltwater. Scientists noted that the slope was also structurally weakened by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015. Glaciers in the area have been thinning by about half a metre annually since 2000. Researchers concluded that extreme warmth and meltwater destabilized the geologically vulnerable slope, highlighting escalating climate risks for mountain regions.
