Meta Platforms plans to release a camera-free pair of smart glasses internally code-named Luna this fall, according to people familiar with the matter. The Information first reported the upcoming hardware shift. The strategic move follows intense regulatory scrutiny and growing public privacy concerns regarding continuous video recording capabilities on wearable devices. To address these vulnerabilities while expanding its consumer product lineup, the Luna model completely omits optical cameras. Instead, the innovative device integrates six advanced built-in microphones enabling seamless user interaction with Meta's conversational AI chatbot and Muse, the company's newly deployed consumer AI agent. Additionally, the glasses feature a convenient physical side button for rapid activation of Meta assistant features, accompanied by high-quality open-ear speakers similar to those found in existing hardware generations. Meta currently targets October for initial commercial shipments and may formally unveil the device at its annual Connect developer conference in Menlo Park. Representatives declined comment.
