Mississippi police arrested 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff in connection with the death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune, whose body was discovered hanging from a tree in Jackson on August 3. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced the arrest during a Friday news conference, following a state medical examiner’s ruling late Thursday that classified the manner of death as a homicide. Authorities executed search and arrest warrants upon encountering Ratliff walking on a public street. Brackney stated that Ratliff maintained an unspecified association with Fortune and indicated that additional arrests remain pending as the criminal investigation continues. Christy Spivey, the victim’s mother, expressed profound relief over the arrest while noting that law enforcement has not yet disclosed a specific motive or forensic evidence. Fortune, a mother of four who had experienced recent struggles with homelessness, was remembered by her family as someone striving to rebuild her life. Court records and legal representation details for the suspect were not immediately available.
