Chicago teens sustain ‘peaceful’ community as warriors

Students at North Lawndale College Prep in Chicago established the Peace Warriors program to combat school fights and neighborhood gun violence through the nonviolence principles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Participants undergo rigorous summer and school-year training to recognize emotional triggers, resolve arguments peacefully, and de-escalate tensions proactively. Beyond campus mediation, these peer ambassadors organize condolence runs to support classmates coping with grief and trauma from community violence. Program participants have also traveled to mentor teens in other violence-impacted regions, including East St. Louis, on building localized nonviolence networks. The initiative demonstrates how youth-led intervention can challenge normalized cycles of urban trauma and foster safer community environments.
