After years of delay, funding to restart Chicago-Quad Cities rail service has Illinois back on track
PUBLISHED Sep 11, 2026, 7:40 AM ET
The Federal Railroad Administration granted a six-year extension for seventy-eight million dollars in unspent federal funds, reviving the long-delayed Chicago-to-Quad Cities passenger rail project. Originally awarded in 2010 through Senator Dick Durbin, the grant faced an imminent expiration deadline before federal authorities approved the rollover. Governor J.B. Pritzker and the Illinois General Assembly previously committed substantial state resources via capital funding programs to support necessary infrastructure work and engineering expenses. The current operational blueprint outlines two daily round trips connecting Chicago and Moline, with an intermediate stop scheduled in Geneseo utilizing BNSF Railway and Iowa Interstate Railroad corridors. Moline established a downtown multi-modal facility known as The Q to accommodate travelers. Despite removing the funding expiration hurdle, officials have not released an official construction timetable or launch date. Remaining challenges involve complex logistical negotiations between the Illinois Department of Transportation and private freight rail operators regarding track upgrades across fifty-five miles between Bureau County and Moline.
