UK deepens reliance on Musk's SpaceX, spending nearly $40 million on satellite services

The United Kingdom has increased its defense spending on SpaceX satellite services, allocating nearly forty million dollars toward military-grade broadband infrastructure. According to Ministry of Defence disclosures, Britain integrated Starshield airtime with existing terminals in twenty-four before procuring dedicated hardware last year. The specialized military service incurs substantially higher costs than commercial alternatives, with monthly subscription plans reaching twenty-five thousand dollars for unlimited data alongside hardware expenses ranging between four thousand and seven thousand pounds per terminal. While Britain maintains independent sovereign capabilities through its Skynet network and a stake in Eutelsat, the integration highlights growing reliance on commercial low-Earth orbit mega-constellations for secure tactical connectivity. Similar military evaluations are underway globally, including trials conducted by the New Zealand Defence Force. SpaceX continues expanding its defense footprint following major multi-year contracts awarded primarily through United States Space Force programs, reinforcing its dominant position within the commercial aerospace and defense sectors.
