FCC Proposes Spectrum Expansion That Could Supercharge SpaceX Starlink
PUBLISHED Sep 9, 2026, 2:18 PM ET
On September 9, 2026, the Federal Communications Commission announced a formal proposal to unlock more than 1,000 MHz of additional spectrum for satellite broadband services. Scheduled for a commissioner vote on September 30, the initiative would open frequencies in the 12.7 GHz and 42 GHz bands to support non-geostationary orbit operations. FCC Chair Brendan Carr stated the regulatory update aims to stimulate American technological innovation and expand high-speed internet competition nationwide. While structured as an industry-wide measure, the policy stands to heavily benefit SpaceX and its Starlink constellation, which recently reported operating approximately 9,600 satellites serving over 10.3 million subscribers across 164 international markets. This regulatory action follows an April FCC decision updating spectrum-sharing rules to increase satellite capacity. Industry stakeholders anticipate the ruling will directly assist operators in managing network congestion and scaling enterprise and in-flight connectivity offerings heading into next year.
