Sixteen former University of Michigan hockey players have filed a federal sex discrimination lawsuit in Detroit, alleging decades-old ritualized sexual hazing and abuse by teammates. The plaintiffs, who played between 1984 and 2001, claim coaching and athletic staff were aware of the misconduct, which included forced alcohol consumption, physical intimidation, and genital shaving. Attorney Michael Pitt filed the complaint on Wednesday, stemming from recent discussions among former teammates in 2024. The University of Michigan acknowledged the allegations as disturbing but denied legal responsibility, stating that any misconduct violated established institutional policy. The institution highlighted that it enacted an official anti-hazing framework in 1982. The 72-page federal court document details severe systematic hazing practices required for team integration during the multi-decade period. Legal experts note the case underscores ongoing scrutiny regarding institutional oversight and accountability within collegiate athletic programs across the United States.
