Whitmer rethinks Line 5 tunnel permits, ramps up shutdown pleas after court ruling

Michigan environmental regulators are reviewing recently granted permits for the Line 5 utility tunnel project following a state Supreme Court ruling that raised environmental review standards. Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy Director Phil Roos announced the reevaluation Wednesday, responding to court mandates requiring deeper scrutiny of ecological impacts and project alternatives. Whitmer also urged Enbridge CEO Gregory Ebel to shut down the 73-year-old dual pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac within months rather than waiting for the proposed tunnel. Environmental groups praised the renewed regulatory hurdles as a crucial victory for Great Lakes preservation. Conversely, business associations and labor unions condemned the delay as detrimental to regional energy security. Enbridge criticized the prolonged regulatory process for a project initiated in 2018, though the corporation stated it remains open to further discussions with state officials regarding infrastructure safety and operations.
