See How Much Corals Have Declined in Just 40 Years
PUBLISHED Sep 10, 2026, 7:47 AM ET
A comprehensive new report reveals that the world’s hard coral cover has declined by nearly 10 percent over the past forty years, driven primarily by ongoing climate change and ocean warming. Published by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, the findings aggregate over twenty-one million observations across nearly ninety thousand surveys spanning 120 countries and territories between 1980 and 2024. Marine ecologists note that consecutive global bleaching events, fueled by rising sea temperatures, are shortening the critical recovery windows needed for corals to regenerate. While reefs have shown localized resilience and capacity for bounce-back when protected from stressors like pollution and overfishing, scientists warn that imminent warming trends, including a brewing super El Niño, threaten widespread degradation. Experts emphasize that urgent local conservation and global emissions mitigation remain vital to preventing the loss of the vast majority of tropical coral ecosystems by the year 2050.
