Circle Wins U.S. National Bank Charter Approval
PUBLISHED Sep 10, 2026, 11:13 AM ET
Circle Internet Group secured final U.S. regulatory approval on Thursday to establish a national trust bank, operating under the official name Circle National Trust following authorization from federal regulators. Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Allaire confirmed that the approval grants the crypto issuer direct access to core United States financial and payment infrastructure. The decision allows the digital asset firm to hold reserves directly within the Federal Reserve system, bypassing intermediary commercial banks that previously managed its multi-billion-dollar backing. The milestone triggered a five percent rally in Circle-linked equities and sparked debate across traditional banking sectors regarding rapid blockchain integration into mainstream finance. Competitors and traditional banking lobbies raised questions concerning systemic risk and deposit migration as digital currency firms secure federal safety nets. The charter requires adherence to federal banking oversight, capital reserve mandates, and compliance standards enforced by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
