OpenAI announced that an advanced unreleased artificial intelligence model solved the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of seven Millennium Prize Problems established by the Clay Mathematics Institute. Approximately 10,000 autonomous AI agents operating in parallel completed the solution over an 88-hour period, utilizing heavy computational resources. The proof demonstrates that three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations modeling fluid dynamics can develop a singularity in finite time. OpenAI published both the analytical proof and a machine-verified formalization written in Lean. The announcement drew immediate attention and a priority dispute from New York University mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpöge, a researcher at Anthropic.
