American Family Missing After Small Plane Crashes Off Bahamas Coast
PUBLISHED Sep 8, 2026, 12:03 PM ET
An urgent multi-agency search and rescue operation is underway off the coast of the Bahamas following the disappearance of a small American aircraft carrying a family of four. The Piper PA-34 five-seater plane departed from Great Harbour Cay on Monday morning, heading toward Miami Executive Airport in Florida. Approximately 45 minutes after takeoff, air traffic control lost contact with the vehicle roughly thirteen miles west of Andros Island near Red Bays. The passengers aboard have been identified as 80-year-old Mario Lamar Sr., an experienced pilot with over four decades of aviation history, alongside 79-year-old Lili Lamar, 28-year-old Sofia Sosa, and 22-year-old Christian Sosa. Severe weather conditions initially hindered local rescue teams from safely deploying vessels and aircraft to the search zone. Relatives have publicly called on Bahamian authorities and international partners to coordinate all available resources. Investigations into the precise cause of the sudden descent remain active as emergency crews comb the region.
