G7 Issues Urgent Quantum Cyber Warning

PUBLISHED Sep 7, 2026, 8:47 AM ET

The G7 Cybersecurity Working Group issued a joint advisory urging organizations worldwide to transition immediately to post-quantum cryptography. The international advisory highlights the growing threat that quantum computing poses to public-key cryptography across global digital infrastructure. The advisory warns that cryptographically relevant quantum computers could soon break standard encryption systems. Security agencies emphasized the severe risk of harvest now and decrypt later attacks. In these operations, malicious threat actors intercept and store encrypted data today to decrypt it once advanced quantum hardware becomes fully operational. According to the report, compromised authentication mechanisms could allow attackers to impersonate trusted entities, compromise critical equipment, forge confidential data, and undermine secure communications. The working group stressed that the impending quantum era represents an immediate economic and business risk rather than a distant technical hypothesis. Recent predictions from Google indicate that computers capable of breaking existing encryption techniques could emerge within three years. Despite these warnings, the G7 report notes that quantum security preparedness remains significantly under-resourced across many major enterprises and critical sectors. Public and private organizations must coordinate global migration efforts to post-quantum standards to safeguard sensitive data, global supply chains, and critical infrastructure against near-term compromise.
