Colorado: 4.2 Million-Gallon Raw Sewage Spill Contaminates Arkansas River
PUBLISHED Sep 5, 2026, 5:43 PM ET
Approximately 4.2 million gallons of untreated raw sewage spilled into the Arkansas River in Pueblo, Colorado, following a stormwater pipe patch failure. The discharge occurred between August 26 and August 27, prompting emergency responses from federal and state authorities. Senator John Hickenlooper inspected the contamination site at Confluence Park, characterizing the infrastructure failure as a severe local crisis. Subsequent water quality sampling revealed Escherichia coli concentrations reaching 488 CFU per 100 milliliters near Baxter Road and 435 CFU per 100 milliliters near Moffat Road, exceeding upstream background levels by roughly fiftyfold. In response, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment instituted mandatory water contact advisories along the river corridor from Pueblo to the John Martin Reservoir. Colorado Parks and Wildlife extended these restrictions across regional state wildlife properties to safeguard public health and aquatic ecosystems while remediation efforts continue.
