Trump administration scrubs data on gender-based bullying from school civil rights survey

The Education Department has released the 2023-24 Civil Rights Data Collection, but gender-identity and nonbinary information is suppressed in the public files. The department says the collection covers virtually every public school and includes civil-rights indicators including harassment and bullying. Its 2023-24 survey had required gender-identity bullying data and expanded nonbinary reporting for districts already collecting that information. The released files now suppress affected fields, according to Associated Press and NPR examinations, citing President Donald Trump’s January 20, 2025, executive order defining federal sex policy as male and female. The order directs agencies to use sex terminology in applicable policies and documents and remove materials promoting what it calls gender ideology, but does not specifically name historical CRDC data. The Education Department also omitted its customary First Look Report. The release was delayed beyond the agency’s schedule. The next CRDC collection removes nonbinary and gender-identity questions, while data collection continues.
