Athletic’s review of former NFL reporter Dianna Russini concludes she didn’t comply with standards

PUBLISHED Sep 3, 2026, 4:16 PM ET

The Athletic concluded that NFL reporter Dianna Russini violated newsroom standards by failing to disclose her relationship with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. The findings, released Thursday, followed a nearly five-month review of Russini’s work after photos of the pair at an Arizona resort emerged publicly in April. Editorial director Mike Semel reviewed 903 stories, 204 podcast episodes and 77 videos, and interviewed Athletic staff. The review did not determine the nature of Russini and Vrabel’s relationship and found no clear evidence that she used journalism to promote Vrabel or his teams. However, Semel said the relationship created an appearance of a conflict and should have been disclosed, regardless of whether it was romantic. The Athletic added editor’s notes to four pieces. Russini, who resigned in April, said she stands by her reporting. Vrabel declined to comment Thursday, saying he had moved on and was focused on the Patriots’ season.
