Martin McDonagh’s ‘Wild Horse Nine’ hits Venice Film Festival with a dark CIA tale

British-Irish filmmaker Martin McDonagh debuted his new dramatic feature film "Wild Horse Nine" at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday, shifting his artistic focus toward international espionage and historical geopolitics. The narrative stars Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich as Central Intelligence Agency operatives journeying to Easter Island shortly before the 1973 Chilean military coup. McDonagh crafted the screenplay after years of fascination with historical intelligence operations, moving away from conventional dark comedies to examine themes of individual regret and state-level culpability. The production joins a competitive lineup for the Golden Lion award, following the festival success of McDonagh's previous critically acclaimed projects. Cast members Parker Posey and Steve Buscemi join the principal actors in supporting roles for the international release scheduled later this year.
