HCA Healthcare Announces Layoffs as Uninsured Patient Costs Surge

PUBLISHED Sep 3, 2026, 7:55 AM ET

HCA Healthcare announced corporate and support workforce reductions following a surge in uninsured patient costs and healthcare policy shifts. The Nashville-based hospital operator confirmed that a small percentage of positions are being eliminated, offering severance and recruitment support to affected personnel. Despite reporting second-quarter revenues of twenty billion dollars and net income of one billion dollars, the company absorbed an estimated four hundred million dollar negative pretax impact from rising uninsured volumes. Consequently, HCA lowered its financial outlook for the year, projecting total exchange-related payer impacts between one billion and one.2 billion dollars. The announcement contributed to a two percent decline in company stock. The cuts align with broader industry trends as other major health systems implement workforce restructuring amid mounting operational pressures. Forty-five hospitals and health systems announced reductions affecting nearly six thousand positions through July.
