Taiwanese technology firms plan to invest an additional $20 billion in the United States, driven by growing global demand for artificial intelligence applications. Taiwan Economy Minister Kung Ming-hsin announced the pledge on Wednesday at the SEMICON trade show in Taipei alongside U.S. officials. The investment follows a comprehensive assessment conducted by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs following the SelectUSA Investment Summit in May. The new commitments build on chipmaker TSMC's previously announced expansion in Arizona, which raised its total planned U.S. investment to $265 billion. U.S. Commerce Department official Bill Frauenhofer welcomed the news, stating it strengthens domestic semiconductor supply chain resilience under the federal CHIPS Act initiative. While specific participating companies were not detailed, the investments target chip and AI supply chains. The move comes amid continued efforts by U.S. policymakers to expand domestic semiconductor manufacturing and ongoing political discussion regarding global technology production.
