Micron's Taiwan unions threaten strike over bonus dispute
PUBLISHED Sep 1, 2026, 4:35 AM ET
Micron Technology faces a potential strike in Taiwan as labour unions representing nearly two-thirds of its local workforce demand an overhaul of the chip maker's bonus system. Two unions in Taoyuan and Taichung, representing about 10,000 members among 15,000 workers, reported that over 80% of participating members backed strike action in an August survey. The dispute arises as booming artificial intelligence hardware demand tightens global memory supply and lifts sector profits. Micron stated that this year's performance bonus payout will reach a historic high while committing to ongoing employee dialogue and legal compliance. Authorities in Taipei warn that a work stoppage would disrupt operations at Micron's largest global manufacturing base, which produces critical dynamic random-access memory and high-bandwidth memory chips. The conflict parallels a recent dispute at South Korea's Samsung Electronics, where a planned strike was averted after negotiations secured a profit-sharing bonus pool tied to operating income.
