Chemical Tank Explosion at Washington Paper Mill, Multiple Casualties

On May 26, 2026, a catastrophic structural failure occurred at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility in Longview, Washington, when an 80,000-gallon storage tank imploded. The vessel contained white liquor, a highly corrosive alkaline chemical used in the kraft pulping process. The disaster resulted in eleven worker fatalities and left eight other individuals hospitalized with severe chemical burns and inhalation injuries. The incident happened near employee areas during a shift change, compounding the human toll. Released chemicals breached secondary containment and entered local drainage systems near the Columbia River, triggering emergency environmental containment operations. Federal regulators, including the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, along with state agencies, launched immediate investigations into plant safety protocols. Prior safety inspections had warned of exterior metal thinning on aging industrial infrastructure at the site.
