Zion National Park Flash Flooding

PUBLISHED Sep 1, 2026, 1:24 PM ET

Flash flooding swept through Zion National Park and nearby Springdale, Utah, on Monday as thunderstorms dumped heavy rain across southern Utah. The National Weather Service issued repeated flash-flood warnings for Washington and Kane counties, including Zion, after the National Park Service reported flooding across the park and along the Virgin River. An NWS warning at 3:58 p.m. MDT said up to 2 inches of rain had fallen and the river gauge near Springdale exceeded 4,000 cubic feet per second. Later, the gauge peaked above 5,500 cubic feet per second at 8 p.m., while rainfall totals reached about 2.25 inches. NPS guidance says The Narrows closes during flash-flood warnings, although a blanket cancellation of Angels Landing trips was not independently established. Flooding also damaged homes and roads in Springdale. The warnings followed a deadly weekend flood at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Additional thunderstorms remained possible Tuesday, according to forecasts.
