Summer 2026 is on track to surpass the United States average temperature record set during the historic Dust Bowl summer of 1936, according to climate data released at the end of August. Statistics compiled from June 1 through August 29 show that contiguous U.S. temperatures reached approximately 2.05 degrees Fahrenheit above normal. Climate scientist Brian Brettschneider noted that the milestone is nearly locked in, driven heavily by record-shattering overnight lows that surged to 2.37 degrees above average. In addition to thermal milestones, elevated atmospheric moisture made the season the most humid summer on record nationwide. Cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston, and New Orleans experienced exceptional vapor levels. This humidity created a feedback loop amplifying nighttime warmth while moderating peak daytime highs, leaving 1936 ahead strictly in daytime maximums. The persistent heat index and lack of nighttime cooling heightened public health risks across affected metropolitan regions.
