Walmart, e.l.f. Slash Prices Using Tariff Refunds as U.S. Households Feel the Pinch

Major United States retailers have begun utilizing billions of dollars in tariff refunds to reduce everyday consumer prices following a landmark federal court ruling. The Supreme Court decided in February that broad import tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act were invalid, allowing eligible importers to seek refunds. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that approximately 168 billion dollars was collected from roughly 330,000 importers, with over 100 billion dollars returned by late summer. Walmart led price reductions by allocating nearly 2.9 billion dollars in refunds to lower costs on 11,000 items across food and apparel. Meanwhile, e.l.f. Beauty deployed 50 million dollars in refunds to test lower pricing, resulting in a significant sales increase and permanent markdowns on select products. Economists note that while this corporate strategy offers temporary relief as households face elevated fuel and grocery costs, the deflationary impact will likely diminish once one-time funds are depleted.
