The state of New Mexico filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration on August 26, alleging that federal agencies and border wall contractors unlawfully drilled unauthorized wells and extracted groundwater in the state's southern region. State Engineer Elizabeth Anderson brought the legal action, claiming that U.S. Customs and Border Protection bypassed state water laws during the construction of nearly 180 miles of border barrier infrastructure. New Mexico is seeking an immediate court order to halt further drilling, remediate existing extraction sites, and secure financial damages for the depleted water resources. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham criticized the actions as a direct theft of vital water supplies relied upon by local residents, ranchers, and agricultural producers. The legal challenge highlights a sharp constitutional conflict between federal immunity for national security projects and state oversight of vital natural resources in drought-stricken regions across the American Southwest.
