USS Abraham Lincoln sails past Singapore on its way home from Middle East

The USS Abraham Lincoln sailed past Singapore early Sunday while heading home after more than 250 consecutive days at sea supporting U.S. military operations against Iran, the Associated Press reported. AP journalists on Indonesia’s Batam island observed the Nimitz-class carrier transiting waters near Singapore after 1 a.m. local time. Thai officials said the carrier is expected to make a port visit for crew rest and recovery before returning to its U.S. base. The deployment has drawn scrutiny because of its duration and reports from families and other outlets alleging food and hygiene-supply shortages, difficult living conditions and declining morale. Navy officials have disputed some of those reports. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao said Aug. 14 that the Lincoln had been deployed 266 days, including 200 days in a combat zone, and said troop welfare remained a priority. The USS George Washington has relieved the Lincoln in the region.
