US Government Transfers Seized Bitcoin, Sparking Market Sell-Off Fears

The U.S. government transferred a small amount of Bitcoin seized from Alameda Research, sparking investor concerns about potential mass liquidation of its remaining holdings. Blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence flagged the movement of approximately 0.0048 BTC, worth roughly $380, from assets confiscated three years ago from Alameda's Binance US accounts. The transfer triggered immediate market speculation, though Arkham did not describe it as a sale or identify a destination exchange. Government-linked addresses hold approximately 324,552 BTC valued at $25.5 billion. The news compounded existing pressure from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole speech, which signaled potential rate hikes. On August 30, Bitcoin dropped over 5% to $83,135, liquidating over 270,000 traders in 24 hours. No federal agency has confirmed the transfer's purpose or plans for remaining assets. A March 2025 executive order established a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve directing that forfeited Bitcoin be held as a reserve asset.
