OpenAI Terminates Partnership With SpaceX-Owned Cursor

PUBLISHED Aug 28, 2026, 10:57 PM ET

OpenAI announced Friday that it will terminate its long term partnership with the AI coding assistant Cursor following its acquisition by Elon Musk team at SpaceX. OpenAI stated it cannot guarantee SpaceX will operate the technology within established terms of service. Direct model access for Cursor users is scheduled to end on November 12, 2026. Cursor, developed by Anysphere, was recently acquired by SpaceX in a massive all stock transaction. OpenAI pointed to prior contract disputes involving Musk owned entities, including xAI and Twitter, as key factors behind the cancellation. The decision forces thousands of software developers and enterprise users relying on OpenAI models within the Cursor programming environment to transition to alternative foundational models, such as Grok. SpaceX representatives did not immediately issue public comments regarding the upcoming cutoff. The move deepens corporate friction between OpenAI and Musk expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem as fierce competition intensifies across US markets.
