Elon Musk’s space company to build new rocket launching site in Louisiana

SpaceX announced Tuesday that it plans to invest $100 billion in Starbase Louisiana, a massive new Starship launch complex in Vermilion Parish. The 125,000-acre coastal site, near Pecan Island, would become the company’s largest launch facility and is designed to support thousands of flights annually. SpaceX said construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the first Louisiana launch targeted for 2029. Louisiana Economic Development estimates 3,000 direct jobs over 10 years, plus more than 8,100 indirect positions. The project would include launch pads, propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing, shipping facilities and employee housing. Governor Jeff Landry called the investment transformative, while SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said the company would support coastal and wildlife restoration. Environmental groups and some residents have raised concerns about habitat, hurricane protection, transparency and proposed federal regulatory changes. The project remains subject to future construction, regulatory and environmental processes before operations begin there soon.
