Microsoft’s July layoffs are confirmed, not a new August announcement. On July 6, Microsoft said it was eliminating about 4,800 roles, or 2.1% of its global workforce, mainly in commercial and Xbox organizations. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said the company was aligning people and investments with changing business priorities and that eliminated roles were not being directly replaced by artificial intelligence. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma separately announced 3,200 gaming job reductions through fiscal 2027, including 1,600 immediately, alongside plans involving four studios. The layoffs followed a June 30 Reuters report, based on Business Insider, that Microsoft was preparing cuts below 2.5%; Reuters said it could not independently verify that report. Microsoft continues AI infrastructure spending while restructuring operations. The supplied August 29 framing is outdated. Current coverage confirms the layoffs occurred in July, while later reports focus on consequences for Xbox employees, studios and the wider technology labor market.
