The Earth is sizzling, but climate isn’t a hot topic for Democrats in this year’s campaigns

Climate change has receded as a leading issue in Democratic campaigns, even as scientists warn 2026 could rank among the warmest years recorded. An Associated Press report published Aug. 29 examined the shift through the Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary, where incumbent Sen. Ed Markey faces Rep. Seth Moulton before the Sept. 1 election. The report found Markey promotes Green New Deal legislation but is emphasizing affordability, opposition to President Donald Trump and other priorities. Markey’s campaign highlighted cost-of-living concerns at an August 15 town hall. Searchlight Institute, a think tank, argued in September 2025 that voters prioritize affordability and healthcare over climate change and recommended emphasizing lower energy costs. Climate-policy reporting has documented reduced congressional references to climate since 2025. Markey introduced Green New Deal bills in July and received endorsements from climate groups. The evidence supports a messaging shift, not abandonment of climate policy, with Massachusetts providing an example.
