Israeli strikes kill 5 in Gaza, Iran touts Russian energy deal, and other news in the Middle East

Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip killed five people on Friday, intensifying tensions despite an existing ceasefire framework. Local hospital officials reported casualties in Khan Younis and Gaza City, bringing total fatalities past 1,303 since the cessation agreement began. Simultaneously, the United Nations International Maritime Organization reported that 19 seafarers have died and at least 6,000 remain stranded on hundreds of commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf following the outbreak of the Iran war on February 28. In response to mounting regional conflict, the United States enacted new financial sanctions targeting entities linked to Tehran. Meanwhile, Iranian officials announced renewed diplomatic discussions with Russia aimed at reviving a bilateral energy pipeline initiative to mitigate domestic gas shortages and bypass Western economic pressure.
