PayPal Holdings Inc. shares slumped 16 percent in premarket trading on Friday, August 28, 2026, after a consortium comprising Advent International and Stripe abandoned a $50 billion buyout bid. The group had offered $60.50 per share in July, representing a 28 percent premium over PayPal's prior trading price and ranking among the largest debt-funded acquisitions in financial technology history. PayPal's board rejected the offer as inadequate, targeting a valuation near $70 per share. Following weeks of discussions through mid-August, the buying consortium declined to increase its bid and withdrew entirely. The development leaves newly appointed Chief Executive Enrique Lores to execute a standalone turnaround strategy, which includes reorganizing into separate business units and cutting $1.5 billion in costs. Stripe elected to pursue alternative strategic priorities, including AI infrastructure expansion. Meanwhile, investor prediction markets on Polymarket lowered the implied probability of a 2026 buyout deal from 70 percent down to 10 percent.
