Barcelona scraps tribute to Spain World Cup winners. Act supporting Catalan symbol is expected

Barcelona canceled a tribute to its eight Spain World Cup champions before Thursday’s LaLiga match against Athletic Club, citing tensions after a police incident involving a fan and the independence flag. Club president Joan Laporta said the recognition proposed by the Spanish soccer federation was not appropriate in the circumstances and that football should unite rather than create confrontation. Barcelona instead said a display supporting the estelada, a pro-independence Catalan symbol, would take place around Camp Nou, with the Catalan National Assembly planning to distribute 10,000 flags. The club had condemned the Elche incident, saying police used disproportionate force when detaining a young supporter after confiscating an estelada. Spain’s Interior Ministry has opened an internal investigation, while police conduct remains disputed. The federation confirmed Barcelona’s tribute was scheduled for August 27. The eight players are Joan García, Eric García, Pedri, Pau Cubarsí, Gavi, Rodri, Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal.
