Fired Stars and Stripes Journalists Sue Pentagon and Defense Secretary Over First Amendment Violations

Three former staff members of the military news outlet Stars and Stripes have filed a federal lawsuit in Washington, D.C., against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other top Pentagon officials. The plaintiffs—publisher Max Lederer, editor-in-chief Erik Slavin, and reporter Lara Korte—argue that their recent terminations for alleged insubordination constitute an illegal retaliation and a direct violation of their First Amendment rights. The lawsuit follows an escalating conflict over the publication's editorial independence from military command. The journalists were dismissed after publicly defending press freedom and publishing critical reports regarding conditions aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln. Legal representatives from multiple advocacy organizations and a Yale Law school clinic filed the complaint to secure an emergency injunction blocking the terminations. The Department of Defense has faced widespread scrutiny over its ongoing efforts to exert administrative control and restrict media access within military publishing structures across various global operational defense bases.
