US Patriot missile stocks in Europe are ‘beyond critical’ due to Iran war, officials say

The U.S. military faces a severe shortage of Patriot missile interceptors in Europe after large numbers were shifted to the Middle East during the Iran war, according to two officials who spoke anonymously to The Associated Press. The officials said European inventories are “beyond critical,” raising concerns about NATO’s ability to counter a sustained Russian ballistic-missile attack. NATO publicly disputed that characterization. Col. Martin O’Donnell said it is “simply not the case” that Patriot stocks are beyond critical and said NATO retains sufficient air-defense ammunition for its defense and support to Ukraine. Independent CSIS analysis estimates the United States has used about 65% of a prewar inventory of 2,330 Patriots, leaving roughly 759 to 827 interceptors by late July. The Pentagon has declined to disclose current stockpile levels. A major Lockheed Martin production expansion aims for 2,000 PAC-3 MSE interceptors annually by 2030. The shortage reflects competing demands across theaters.
